Billerica – Daniel J. Farrell, age 86, passed away peacefully on January 6, 2024, at the Elmhurst Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center. Born on June 25, 1937, in Christmas Island, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, Dan was the 2nd of 15 children of the late John and Cecilia (MacLean) Farrell. He lived a life marked by kindness, generosity, and unwavering devotion to his Catholic faith.
Dan, a former Royal Canadian Mounted Police officer, moved to the United States and settled in Billerica in 1973. He served as a truck driver at United Liquors and was a proud member of the Teamsters Union. In retirement, he found joy in driving tour buses throughout Canada and the United States, eventually concluding his career as the campus shuttle bus driver at Middlesex Community College.
A devoted family man, Dan became the head of his large family and is survived by his daughter, Laurie Farrell, and son-in-law Shawn McCullion of Billerica. He leaves behind brothers Foncie and Roddie Farrell of Canada, and sisters Irene Hasson, Lexie MacMullin, of Canada and Marion MacKenzie of Watertown and many nieces and nephews. Dan was predeceased by his late wife, Janice (Greenwood) Farrell, and siblings Lizzy, Neil, Peggy, Mary Jo, John, Leonard, Catherine, Angus, and Ann Marie.
Dan's love extended beyond his human family to his beloved dogs Leo and Sidney. Always ready for a spirited conversation about politics, his quick wit and generous spirit endeared him to friends and family alike.
The family expresses gratitude to the doctors and nurses at Elmhurst and the caring team of Harmony Hospice for providing comfort and warmth to Dan and his loved ones during his final days.
Dan Farrell will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him, leaving behind a legacy of love, faith, and fond memories that will endure in our hearts. Mass of Christian Burial at St. Matthew the Evangelist Parish in St. Theresa Church, 466 Boston Rd., Billerica will be held Tuesday, January 16, 2024 at 10:00 AM.
