Obituary of Mary C. Dowd

Mary Catherine Dowd, formerly of Arlington, MA, died peacefully on February 5th at the D’Youville Long-Term Care Community in Lowell, MA with her family by her side.  Mary was born March 6th, 1938 to Irish immigrants, James Joseph Dowd and Catherine Mary Dowd (Griffin) who predeceased her.

Mary’s love of her Irish heritage and her faith in God were ever present.  Born in Boston, she grew up in the Mission Hill section of the city.  She attended Mission High School and went on to have a successful career at Bank of America for almost 40 years.  Mary’s caring nature made those around her feel like they were the most special person in the room. Fond memories include Sunday lunches of tuna fish sandwiches and brownies with nieces and nephews, traveling to Ireland with her niece Kelly to visit cousins, and her many trips to Maine and dinners with friends.

She is survived by her brother, James Dowd of Billerica, her nieces: Judy Durkin (Whidden), Joy Oley (Whidden), Kelly Dowd, Maura Beth Kammerman (Dowd), and her nephews: Michael Dowd, Chris Dowd, Patrick Dowd, Sean Dowd, Dan Dowd, and John Whidden.  She had many great-nieces and nephews who were blessed to be loved by Mary.  And her cousins in both Ireland and America were near and dear to her heart.  Along with her parents, she will join her brother Thomas Dowd, her sisters-in-law Nancy and Phyllis Dowd, her cousin Edward Gibbons, and her nephew, James Whidden in the kingdom of heaven.

Services will be held on Friday, February 9th at The Mission Church, also known as The Basilica and Shrine of Our Lady of Perpetual Help, 1545 Tremont St Boston, MA.  Viewing will be at 9:00 and services begin at 10:00.

In lieu of flowers, please make donations in Mary’s memory to the D’Youville Foundation where Mary was so well taken care of and loved by the staff.
