Obituary of James A. Scalzi
James A. Scalzi, age 94, husband of the late Maria Grazia "Grace" (Naturale) Scalzi, died peacefully, Tuesday, November 29, 2011, surrounded by his family at Life Care Center of Merrimack Valley in Billerica, where he had resided for the past year and a half. His previous residence was in Hollywood, FL, where he spent the greater part of his retirement after leaving Cape Cod. The son of the late John and Antoinette (Calf) Scalzi, Jimmy was born June 26, 1917 and raised in Watertown. During his life he was a member of the Army Aircorp and was proud to serve his Country. A lifelong member of the Squillani Club in Watertown, he enjoyed his Italian heritage. Jimmy was an employee of the Simmons Mattress Company until his plant closed. In his spare time he did upholstering in his basement, a skill that he taught himself. He used the money to travel with his beloved wife, Grace. In addition to traveling he enjoyed dancing, singing, photography, and spending time with his many friends along the entire east coast. He was always the life of the party; his voice and humor will be missed. He is survived by his daughter, Annette M. (Scalzi) Devine of Billerica, and his two sons and daughters-in-law, James and Barbara Scalzi of Cape Cod and Robert and Jeniss Scalzi of North Carolina. Jimmy was the wonderful "Papa" of Denise Devine, MSG Edward Devine (U.S. Army) and his wife Lisa, Dianne (Devine) Kane and her husband Ed, Eric Scalzi, and Jennifer Scalzi. The joy in his life was being a great-grandfather to Heather Devine, David and Jamie Grace Johnson, Katie Kane and Mary Kane, and Brenna and Eric Scalzi, Jr. One of 8 children, he is survived by his two sisters, Phyllis Sbordone and Doris Merlino, both of Watertown. He was also the brother of the late Domenic, Ralph, John, Josephine, and Robert Scalzi. He was also the father-in-law of the late Ted Devine. He also leaves many nieces and nephews who were special to him. " Guidie" was the "Last of the Mohicans" and will be missed, a bushel and a peck!
