Obituary of Donald McCaffrey

Donald (Mac) McCaffrey, age 80, died Sunday, November 9, 2014, at his home in Billerica. He was the beloved husband of Mary C. (Trank) McCaffrey. Donald, who would have celebrated his 81st birthday, Wednesday, November 12, was born in Boston in 1933, the son of the late Arthur and Mary (Christensen) McCaffrey. Mac was a lifelong resident of Billerica who enlisted in the United States Army at the age of 17 and served 2 tours in Korea during and after the Korean War. A decorated veteran, he received 2 Bronze Service Stars, a Korean Service Medal, a National Defense Service Medal and a United Nations Service Medal. Following his time in the service, Don worked for both a fertilizer plant in Woburn, Olin Chemical Company in Wilmington for 20 years and the Bedford VA Hospital for 3 years. He later worked in the Cemetery Department, Sewer and Treatment Plant, and the Highway Department for the Town of Billerica for 20 years, retiring at the age of 75. Besides his wife, he is survived by his son, Donald McCaffrey, Jr. and his wife, Alice (Caldarone), of Litchfield, NH, his brother, Arthur (Bud) F. McCaffrey of Billerica, his sister-in-law Barbara (Sullivan) McCaffrey, his son-in-law Tim Bunney of Billerica, and his two loving grandchildren, Jaclyn A. Bunney and Donald A. McCaffrey. He was also the father of the late Pamela Anne Bunney who died in June of this year. and the brother of the late Myrna Gibson, Gertrude McCaffrey, Frank (Mac) McCaffrey, and brother-in-law of the late Marilyn McCaffrey. He is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews. His family wishes to thank his caring doctors, especially his primary doctor at HVG in Chelmsford and Hospice who allowed him to have a peaceful passing.
