Rita Mae (Fuller) Smith, age 93, died Sunday October 14 at the Community Hospice House of Merrimack, NH. She was the beloved wife of the late Alvin “Lefty” Smith, to whom she was married for 65 years. She was born in Boston on August 11, 1925 the daughter of the late William and Mildred (Cowell) Fuller. Rita graduated from Howe High school in Billerica with the class of 1943, where she played on the women’s basketball team. During WWII she was a plane spotter for the Civil Defense, climbing up many of church steeples looking for planes. She later worked as a secretary for the superintendent of the Billerica School Department for 23 years. She was also a member of the Blessed St. Johns XXIII Elder Program in Hudson, NH. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Jeffrey and Luane Smith, of Nashua, NH. Loving grandmother to Robert Arsenault, Jr. and his wife, Anne; Brian Arsenault and his wife, Leslie; Robert Lavery, Jr. and his wife, Sandy; Steven Lavery and his wife, Mallory; and Brian Lavery and his wife, Lael. She is also survived by 9 great grandchildren. She was the aunt of Judith Eburn, John and Beth Eburn, Lance and Naiomi Smith, and Glen and Peg Smith. She was the mother-in-law of Robert Lavery. Rita will join her daughter Nancy Lee Lavery, who passed away on September 30, 2018, in heaven.
